Carmelo To Chicago Bulls: 2014 NBA Draft Edition

If this is the greatest draft of our lifetime, it will be memorable for the many quality players that went as late as the early second round. However, for Chicago Bulls fans, this draft may be remembered as the least memorable move that gets the Bulls one step closer to signing coveted free agent Carmelo Anthony.

The Chicago Bulls acquired Doug McDermott, the #11 Pick in the 2014 NBA Draft, in a draft day trade.
After looking forward to making two mid-first round picks in the deepest NBA Draft in a decade, the Chicago Bulls traded their #16 and #19 Picks along with a future second round pick to the Denver Nuggets for the #11 Pick, Doug McDermott, and the contract of Anthony Morrow.

The deal shaves some salary from next season's salary cap number, in anticipation of creating salary cap space for signing a big name free agent hopefully named Carmelo Anthony.

The trade immediately addresses the woeful Chicago offense, which managed an abysmal 42% FG and a mere 33% from 3-point range.

"Dougie McBuckets" was the concensus college player of the year in his senior year. The Creighton forward led college basketball in scoring, averaging 26.7 PPG while shooting 52.6% from the field and a ridiculous 45% from 3-point range.

With the Bulls trying to free up cap space to sign Carmelo Anthony, McDermott should get a legitimate shot to contribute sooner than later. If Chicago is able to sign Carmelo Anthony after free agency begins July 1st and manage to keep Taj Gibson, their starting line-up of Rose, Butler, Anthony, Gibson, and Noah will be the best in the NBA. However, with so much money tied up in the starters, that only leaves room for rookies and vet mins to make up the bench contribution for a potential NBA championship run.
