Dear Mr. Anthony:
I am but a humble Chicago Bulls fan that happened to have the extreme good fortune to grow up during the Michael Jordan era, and my first pain as a basketball fan was when M.J. retired the first time.
I can tell you, the lows of a championship drought seem lower if you have had one... like only being able to truly miss something if you have had it before.
I can tell you know what I am talking about.
I have seen your will to win in the way you carried an under-achieving Knicks team to the doorstep of the playoffs, every night putting up MVP numbers only to fall short.
You are a winner; you led Syracuse to the NCAA Championship during your freshman year. You were a top high school player and have been a perennial NBA All-Star and Scoring Champion. You have a gold medal with Team USA and were the leading scorer for that team.
Meanwhile, no one talks about you in the same breath as Lebron James, even though you have been on the same level as him since forever. You grew up pushing each other to be great, but for some reason you are not a part of that conversation.
Mr. Anthony, if you choose to come to Chicago, that is all about to change.
Countless experts have been saying that you are an ideal fit to be on this Chicago Bulls team, and with your offense and their defense, the Bulls would be the favorites to be in the NBA Finals next June (even with the Big 3 in Miami). The role players and coaching situation that you never had before is right here waiting for you to sign-up for the greatest ride of your basketball career.
And with what you will have here with Chicago, you will be able to shut Lebron out of the NBA Finals for the next 4 years. Imagine how that will affect how Carmelo Anthony will be remembered in NBA history.
You have hit game winners before, but it all becomes greater when you are competing on the biggest stage. With Chicago, you will hit that game winner in the Eastern Conference Finals against Lebron and in the NBA Finals.
Tom Thibodeau is a Coach of the Year and his players have won MVP and Defensive Player of the Year. Within his system, you will achieve greatness.
The Bulls will win, and along with that team success, you will reap all the individual success you could have ever dreamed of.
You will succeed where Lebron failed because you are not afraid of the shadow of Michael Jordan. He was not the leader that you are, that can recognize a winning situation, a team built just for your talents, and a group of guys that have your back and will go to war along side you every night.
Lebron is afraid of the big moment, and you have never been.
I hope that you know all this to be true after your visit to Chicago on July 1st.
And I hope you choose to step into your place in Chicago Bulls and NBA history.
Sincerely,
A True Fan of Basketball
